Platbands on windows from mdf. Modern options and types of fastening. What you need to know about platbands

Plastic windows are the best option for glazing in private and suburban construction.

This is due to the functionality and reliability of double-glazed windows with PVC frames. However, the use of these products has given rise to a number of other diverse tasks.

One of them is the issue of refining the joint between the frame and the facade wall in the case when the window is installed in the same plane with the wall.

Such a gap remains even with the most professional conduct. installation work. It is possible to hide it with such facing products as platbands on plastic windows.

Why else do you need platbands?

Platbands connect the walls and edges of the window frames so that outwardly everything looks completely harmonious and complete. The same principle is used when framing the entrance to the room, hiding the fasteners of the structure.

Performing this function, the facing product also covers the seams from various third-party influences - the most harmful influences in this case are the sun's rays and moisture.

To some extent, the platbands protect the joints from temperature fluctuations - however, this moment depends on the source material from which the product is made. Despite whole line technological moments, many customers put the decorative function above all else.

Types of cladding structures for windows

The flat type of cladding is the easiest to install and affordable

Platbands for plastic windows are available in several versions:

  • flat products;
  • profiled structures;
  • Shaped products;
  • Carved lining.

Their simplest form is products that have a flat shape. This variation is used most often, it also has a minimum cost. Finishing windows with such platbands is a fairly simple process that can be carried out even without the involvement of specialists.

The production technology of such materials is not particularly complicated. If you are not a supporter of extraordinary design delights, then it is better to use flat products for window decoration.

Profiled platbands for plastic windows have certain protrusions on their outer surface. These protrusions, when viewed from the side, may have different kind- it can be like something periodic or symmetrical, or something more unusual.

Shaped cladding can be made from conventional embossed slats of various widths

The profile is made both in the form of curved planes and using a variety of angles. There are combined profiles that combine all of the above features.

Products of shaped type for window cladding have a relief surface on the outside. There are no restrictions on the type of terrain. These designs can imitate wood, or be made of wood.

Carved platbands are real designer delights - they are usually made from various types of wood.

It is advisable to select such elements with a design consultant, especially if you need to combine wood cladding with plastic windows.

Window cladding materials

Finishing a plastic window with carved metal cladding

The design of window trim does not imply the use of only one type of structure.

These products are made from a variety of materials. The most common plastic platbands. Plastic is most often used for the production of flat products.

It can either consist of separate parts or be a solid structure. Facing from this material will perfectly protect the joints from water and other liquids, temperature changes, as well as exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

The properties of the casings themselves under these influences also do not change in any way. Plastic can be painted in a variety of colors - a common option is when the color is matched to the color of the walls.

In addition to all of the above, such a material has a low coefficient of elongation. This means that there are no deformations under the influence of temperatures - as a result, you do not have to take extra care of leaving thermal gaps during installation. Since plastic is not exposed to water, it will not swell due to moisture.

Polyurethane foam finish perfectly retains its shape under the influence of sunlight and moisture

In addition to plastic products, there are platbands made of PVC or polyurethane. These materials make it possible to produce not only flat, but also profiled products.

Polyurethane window trims are often a structure with a complex external configuration, obtained by pressing or casting. With the complexity of the technology, structures can be made to imitate wood or other coatings.

Both polyurethane and PVC practically do not react to heating under the sun, changes in air humidity or temperature. Products made from these materials are suitable for both interior and exterior finish.

Flat and profile types are also made from MDF. This material is not particularly resistant to moisture, so it is not recommended to use it for exterior decoration.

If mechanical strength is not an important criterion, it is advisable to install foam trims. They will be resistant to all types of external influences, except for mechanical ones.

Styrofoam cladding

Products made from natural wood have the highest price. They can be flat, profiled, shaped or carved. Decorative platbands for plastic windows are made both manually and by machine. Facing structures for windows, which are completely handmade, have the highest cost.

The disadvantage of wood can be attributed to vulnerability to moisture. However, this minus is completely eliminated by competent finishing of the material - we are talking about applying varnish or paint. Also wood cladding for windows are not always combined with double-glazed windows or modern types of finishes.

Use wooden structures it is best if the house is made of wood or externally finished to imitate it.

Platband installation

Installation plastic architraves on windows begins with the installation of a universal slope. The slope is mounted around the entire perimeter of the opening.

Installation of the starting molding for the installation of the cladding

If it becomes necessary to saw off part of the material, this should be done with a hacksaw or electric saw. The most durable fastening is carried out using the starting molding.

On the one hand, the slope is inserted into the molding, and on the other hand, it is attached to the wall or crate using self-tapping screws or screws. To join the slopes with each other, their ends are cut down at an angle of 45 degrees.

Now you can proceed directly to the installation of platbands. You should start from the corners - the elements are washed down at an angle of 45 degrees, similar to how it was done with slopes. The cutting tool is a fine-toothed hacksaw or an electric end saw with a maximum tooth frequency.

The sawing of the structure should be carried out at an angle of 45 degrees

The greatest accuracy of docking is ensured by observing the following recommendations:

After you have finished with the corners, you should proceed to the installation of platbands around the perimeter of the opening. The "nose" of the product is installed in the mounting groove of the slope, while the other end is attached to the wall or crate.

After installing the cladding, it remains only to install the facade panels. On the one hand, they are inserted into the groove of the casing, and on the other hand, they are attached to the crate or wall.

Installing plastic windows should be done in such a way that the window is flush with the wall. In order to mask the resulting joint, they most often use special metal, wooden or plastic platbands for plastic windows and slopes, which can be bought almost everywhere for a very small price.

Types of platbands

A platband on a PVC window made of plastic, metal or other material should not only mask the joint resulting from the installation of a plastic window, but also fit into the overall design. To do this, there are a huge number of varieties of platbands for a slope or a window made of metal, plastic and wood, among which the following main types can be distinguished:

  1. Flat architraves for slopes or external finishing from plastic. This option is the most popular due to its low cost and availability. The installation of such platbands for the street or slopes does not require much effort, so you can install them yourself. Flat platbands on the windows are suitable for those who prefer conciseness in the interior.
  2. The platbands for shaped windows are distinguished by the fact that they have a relief surface. They can be made of wood or another material that imitates wood, such as plastic. Shaped window platbands are most suitable for people who love originality and non-standard solutions in interior design. The price will depend on the material from which the product will be made and on its complexity. Wooden architraves will cost more than their plastic counterparts.
  3. Profiled platbands for windows. They differ from flat models in that their outer side is convex. Such platbands are more expensive than flat ones, but they are considered more stylish.
  4. Carved platbands on the windows. These models are the most expensive. And this is not surprising, because they are practically works of art. On the picture wooden houses often seen carved architraves on the windows installed from the side of the street, made in different colors, which look very beautiful. And if earlier wood was used as a material for their manufacture, now plastic trim on windows in wooden house having a carved shape.

Plastic trim for windows

Plastic platbands on windows have a number of advantages:

  • Unlike a wooden platband, a plastic one does not rot, mold or be affected by a fungus;
  • The plastic trim on the plastic window is waterproof, so it successfully protects the window structure from moisture penetration through the mounting gaps;
  • Unlike metal, a plastic window trim does not corrode;
  • The plastic platband is inexpensive;
  • Plastic trim on windows can be not only white. Wood carved PVC trim looks like real wood in the photo, and their price is much lower;
  • Installing a plastic platband on a slope or window allows you to increase the thermal and sound insulation properties of the window structure;
  • White or colored plastic platbands on plastic windows from the street look very aesthetically pleasing and organic;
  • The plastic platband is strong, durable, practically does not deform;
  • Installing plastic trim on window slopes is simple;
  • It is easy to take care of the PVC casing: if it becomes dirty, it is enough to wipe it with a damp cloth;
  • Plastic platbands for windows, unlike metal ones, are light in weight, so they can be installed on the window structure using ordinary double-sided tape.

Window platbands can be simple overhead or be part of a structure consisting of elements and locks. In the second option, PVC trim is often used for the slope. Examples of plastic platbands can be seen in the photo

Metal trim for windows

Metal platbands on windows are most often made of sheet metal small thickness.

Advantages of metal platbands:

  • the resistance of metal platbands to mechanical damage is much higher than that of plastic platbands;
  • Metal platbands are durable;
  • Metal platbands on windows can be of various shapes;
  • If necessary, metal platbands can be painted;
  • Affordable cost of metal platbands for windows.

In order for the installation of metal platbands on windows to occur without problems, it is very important to accurately make all measurements. Otherwise, the metal profile will have to be cut manually, and it is quite difficult to make an even cut yourself.

Metal platbands on windows can be carved. Such metal products can decorate the window structure wooden house or apartments and at the same time will last a long time.

Materials for the manufacture of platbands

  1. Tree. For finishing PVC windows on wooden houses from the side of the street, platbands made of wood are often used. In the photo you can see wooden architraves on windows painted in various colors that look very organic. The disadvantages of the material include instability to the action of moisture and fire, susceptibility to deformation, decay. Of the advantages - environmental friendliness, ease of processing and aesthetic appearance, especially on wooden houses.
  2. Metal. The second name for metal trim on windows is flashings. The material of manufacture is thin metal sheets. Metal platbands for windows are easy to process, which significantly expands their range. Among other advantages, excellent performance characteristics of metal products and the possibility of painting the surface of metal platbands in any color are noted. Beautiful ornate metal platbands will especially decorate a wooden house. Photos of metal platbands on windows can be viewed below.
  3. PVC. White and colored PVC trim for window slopes are the most common. This is due to the large number of advantages of plastic platbands with the almost complete absence of disadvantages. The plastic platband, installed from the side of the street, easily withstands all weather conditions. The photo shows that the plastic trim can be made in various shapes and colors.
  4. Polyurethane. Window platbands made of this material, in comparison with PVC platbands, are more durable. Polyurethane platbands on plastic windows can withstand even very low temperatures and prevent snow and rain from getting into the house from the street.
  5. Dense foam. Such platbands for plastic windows have low mechanical strength, especially when compared with metal ones, so they are especially rarely used in countries with a high probability of earthquakes. White styrofoam trim on the window can be painted in any color if desired.

How to install platbands correctly

Metal, plastic and wooden platbands on plastic windows and slopes can be attached in several ways. The most common method is installation using mounting elements. First, the upper lath of the casing is attached, and then all the others. The installation is carried out joint-to-joint, so that the window structure looks neat from the street.

Methods for attaching platbands to plastic windows

  • PVC platbands on windows can be fixed with double-sided tape. However, a plastic casing installed in this way may not withstand strong gusts of wind;
  • Installation of a platband made of metal, wood or plastic on a plastic window can be done using mounting elements. This method of attaching the platband to plastic windows is the most popular;
  • Installing metal and plastic trim on PVC windows using an adhesive is not the best option due to the low bonding strength.

Below you can watch a video on how to install PVC trim on windows with your own hands.

Do-it-yourself window trims

It is not difficult to make PVC trim for windows. Plastic trim on plastic windows is usually installed using fasteners, so we will consider this particular option.

  1. Measure the height and width of the window plastic frame. Two widths of the future plastic trim for the window are added to the obtained values.
  2. Next, you need to buy a plastic sheet. Horizontal and vertical parts of a plastic casing are cut out of it onto a plastic window of the desired width.
  3. After the plastic architraves are cut out, a cut must be made at their ends at an angle of 45 °. In this way, the parts of plastic platbands will be joined along the entire perimeter of the plastic window.

It is not very difficult to make wooden platbands with your own hands, but it is unlikely that it will be possible to make metal products at home.

Building a new house or overhaul old are inextricably linked with the insertion of windows. Often preference is given metal-plastic structures. Just replacing the frames will not be enough to give the object a complete look, you will need to install platbands. The range of overlay strips for windows is extensive, the information below will help to study the advantages of plastic trim, get acquainted with the variety of types and the installation process.

Characteristics of plastic products

The primary purpose of installing a platband on windows is to close the gap between the wall and window frame. This will create an additional barrier against the penetration of precipitation, noise and dust into the room. The quality of thermal insulation is also improved. At the same time, platbands perform a decorative function, bringing individual notes to the design of the house. Since ancient times, window frames have been made of wood. modern technologies created conditions for the use of plastic products. Maintaining an attractive appearance while improving performance contributes to the rapid growth in the popularity of plastic trim. What are their advantages, consider in more detail:

  • Resistance to the influence of negative atmospheric factors.
  • Loyal pricing policy.
  • The ability to choose any configuration for the window.
  • Wide color palette. The popularity of white and brown colors is undeniable, but technology allows you to choose other shades of plastic trim that match the overall design of the facade.
  • Not subject to deformation as a result of moisture or temperature fluctuations.
  • The process of installing platbands made of plastic is easy. Overhead strips are fixed on the adhesive composition directly to the window profile or special removable elements are used.
  • Unlike wooden counterparts, plastic planks do not need careful care. To remove the accumulated dirt, it is enough to wipe them with a damp sponge.
  • Successful imitation of various tree species allows the use of platbands for framing windows in wooden log cabins without losing the harmonious consonance in the design.
  • The light weight of the plastic helps to simplify the fastening process to the banal use of double-sided tape when decorating small windows.
  • Market building materials offers a novelty - a plastic trim equipped with a cable channel, which allows you to aesthetically disguise the electrical wiring around the window.
  • Among the range you can find products designed to decorate houses finished with metal or vinyl siding. Such plastic strips are distinguished by a well-thought-out mounting system.
  • Find the right one wood trim for plastic windows it is quite difficult, plastic design is the optimal combination of materials according to texture.
  • No need for additional finishing.
  • Insect damage to platbands made of plastic does not threaten.
  • Long period of operation

Window design options using plastic trim shown in the photo below:

Species diversity of finishing window openings

In the production of finishing strips, various plastics are used, which provide a variety of platbands. The simplest plastic architraves are made of sheet-type material, they mostly have a flat surface. In this case, the internal structure of the plastic can be monolithic or heterogeneous. Possessing a low coefficient of stretching, plastic platbands do not deform on windows as a result of temperature fluctuations or exposure to moisture. This should be taken into account during the installation process when forming thermal gaps.

The second group of plastic platbands includes products, the basis of which consists of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane. The use of these materials significantly expands the range of platbands, making it possible to produce embossed strips or products of unusual shape on windows. The result is achieved by surface pressing or casting. You can install them on windows not only inside the building, but also outside.

If you want to decorate the facade of the building “with a twist”, especially if it is a log house, carved platbands will come to the rescue. The tradition of decorating a house with carvings has existed for more than one century, and after a short oblivion, it successfully returns to modern architecture. The ability to work with wood is not given to everyone, especially since such architraves require regular maintenance and periodic restoration work. Carved platbands for windows made of polyurethane, copying the color of wood, will successfully fit into the architectural ensemble of any housing construction.

In addition to the traditional white color, multi-colored plastic platbands are produced that imitate a certain material: wood or metal. This makes it possible to use them on windows with any decoration of the house.

According to their structure, platbands are overhead and telescopic. The second option is a kind of constructor, in which all elements are interconnected using locks. Often it is supplemented with a set of add-ons.

Important ! A set of plastic products with an extension will simplify the creation of a single ensemble, especially when decorating a colored window or stylized wood.

Specialists use several options for mounting finishing strips on plastic windows. Particularly popular is the method in which the platbands are fixed to the wall or window frame using mounting elements. Among the rich assortment of plastic products, you can find removable structures, when the finishing strips are fixed to special latches. In this case, the device operates on the principle of buttons for clothes: fasteners are fixed on the window frame, a plastic trim is installed on top and pressed until a characteristic click.

Important ! When choosing overhead strips, pay attention to the method of attachment. If installation is provided with the use of special latches, make sure that they are in good condition and that there are no deformations.

The method in which the plastic finishing strips are attached to the window using double-sided tape is the most simple. However, the use of this option for fixing plastic platbands is not common due to insufficient reliability. The risk of damage to the window design is especially high under strong wind loads.

Stages of installation work

Here is an algorithm of actions when installing plastic trim with fasteners:

  • The height of the window frame is measured from the top to the bottom. In the case of installation at the bottom of the ebb, the result obtained is increased by one lath width. If plastic platbands are present around the entire perimeter of the window, forming a closed connection, double the width of the plank is added to the height of the frame.
  • After measurements, the plastic product, purchased in running meters, is cut into pieces for horizontal and vertical window finishing.
  • A cut is formed on each part at an angle of 45 °, which ensures the correct joining of plastic elements along the perimeter of the window.

Advice ! To cut the required angle accurately and quickly, special mounting angles with the necessary markings will help.

Sections on plastic platbands are formed in compliance with the following rules:

  • Horizontal parts have cuts on both sides;
  • In the case of forming a closed joint around the window, vertical plastic strips are prepared with double-sided cuts. If there is an ebb on the window for vertical platbands, a cut is required only from above.

The installation process begins with the installation of the upper plastic element and consists of the following steps:

  • Fixing points are marked on the wall.
  • The holes are drilled with a hammer drill.
  • Plastic dowels are inserted into the prepared recesses.
  • The marking of the fasteners is transferred to the platbands, after which holes are carefully drilled.
  • Plastic strips are fixed around the window opening with self-tapping screws.

Similarly, work is carried out to fix the remaining parts. It is desirable to achieve butt-to-butt joints, this will ensure aesthetics general view plastic structures. The option of installing a plastic frame is presented in the following video:

What is cashing windows and how you can do it yourself

In multi-storey buildings, it is rare to find platbands on the windows. But the beautiful window trimming in a wooden house, without exaggeration, is an old Slavic tradition. Moreover, this tradition was not even affected by the appearance of plastic windows; the architraves changed a little, but did not disappear. Today we will talk about how to cash out windows in a wooden house on our own, as well as a little about everything that is more or less related to this topic.

What you need to know about platbands

We are used to the fact that classic carved platbands must be made of wood. This is certainly true, but time makes its own adjustments. In addition to wood, now such cladding can be made of metal, MDF, but plastic trim for windows is most common.

Of this entire list, natural wood and plastic can be considered universal materials, they are used for both exterior and interior cladding. Plywood and laminated MDF materials are capricious, they are often used only indoors. While the metal trim on the windows is mounted exclusively on the outside, since in the living room it looks rather rough.

Why do people mount cashing

  • The first and perhaps the most important reason for installing such a cladding is decor. The house, the windows of which are decorated with cashing, has a complete, harmonious appearance;
  • Cashing on windows, in addition to decorative, can also carry a corrective function. So narrow and, as it were, elongated platbands will make the squat structure visually taller. A wide cashing will give a small house a solid look;
  • It is no secret that many of our compatriots save on professional builders and hire shabashniks to build a house or a summer residence. As a result, horizontal and vertical window openings, to put it mildly, are not respected.

In this case, cashing out for plastic or wooden windows from the outside and from the inside it simply closes the hard-hitting cracks. The same thing happens when a wooden house is built from a freshly sawn forest, during shrinkage, window openings often lead and the cracks need to be covered with something;

  • Now the vast majority of houses are built according to standard projects. This is much more convenient, because everything has already been calculated, drawn and tested many times in practice. But people want exclusivity. And what could be easier than carved cashing on the windows, especially if it is made by hand;
  • Here you yourself can choose any ornament, from the classic Old Slavonic, to the fabulous motifs of the local ethnic group, or even individual drawings. I had to see platbands at the dacha of a talented biker. Believe me, a wooden frame with carved, assorted motorcycles on the windows is impressive;
  • In addition, platbands also have a purely practical purpose. They additionally protect the perimeter of the window opening from the penetration of moisture, debris, direct sunlight, and also serve as an external insulation.

There are no drawbacks as such for such a cladding, but there are some nuances that should be considered when choosing and installing:

  • So if you decide to make this beauty with your own hands, then a decent appearance, and most importantly, the durability of your cashing directly depends on the quality of the antiseptic, stain and varnish or paint you have chosen;
  • The choice of wood species is of great importance., but we will talk about this in a separate chapter;
  • Many people think that cashing for plastic windows on the outside should be exclusively plastic or metal. I can assure you that this is not the case. Of course, wood goes really badly under snow-white plastic. But now there is a huge selection of laminated plastic. Its price is not much higher, but you can choose the texture and color for any type of wood.

We often hear that supposedly under a white plastic window, wooden platbands can be painted in White color and everything will be alright. Do not believe, such recommendations can only be given by people who have never seen such a combination with their own eyes. If you really like white plastic so much, put metal or plastic platbands under it. And under the tree you need to put laminated plastic windows.

What are cashiers

Before buying or ordering ready-made cash, you need to decide what exactly you need. The fact is that platbands are telescopic and overhead. Telescopic does not mean folding, as many people think. It's just that they have a characteristic L-shaped protrusion, which should go into a special groove in the casing.

The design is certainly convenient, but such cashing is used only for cladding internal doors. It has only an indirect relation to windows. At least, I have never seen telescopic cashing installed outside on the window casing.

In this case, we are only interested in overhead platbands. As a rule, on the window opening, wooden and metal platbands are fixed with self-tapping screws or nails. Sometimes you can find fastening on wooden spikes, but this is only for wooden cashing. Landing on glue is used for plastic cladding and as an additional fixation on wood and metal.

Choosing wood

Many mistakenly believe that competent selection of wood is important only for outer cladding windows. Platbands inside the house, of course, are not so susceptible to aggressive effects. external environment, but the tree for them should be chosen no less carefully. Although here the emphasis is not so much on sustainability, but on compliance with the internal design of housing.

Elite types of wood, such as oak, beech or ash, without any doubt, look very attractive, one might say luxurious. But such platbands are better to buy or order. With your own hands, you cannot adequately process such hard rocks. In addition to a special tool, skill is also needed here.

It is more convenient to make internal platbands from linden, alder or coniferous species, in other words, any soft wood will do here. On the outside, things are a little more complicated. It is believed that classic architraves should be made of birch or pine.

Naturally, this does not mean that they do not need additional protection, just here you can get by with one stain and varnish. Without using deep, and sometimes even aggressive impregnations, which largely neutralize the naturalness of the material.

Choose a template for the platband

Choosing an ornament for your windows for most people is perhaps the most difficult part of the preparation. After all, it is understood that cashing should stand for more than a dozen years, and naturally everyone wants it to always look relevant.

In professional terminology, window cashing consists of three parts. The upper, central part is traditionally referred to as the kokoshnik. On both sides of the window there are towels, below, as usual, a window sill. We will start from these names, although they may change in different regions.

  • If there is really a lot of work, that is, you need to cultivate windows in a large two or three-story house, plus there is summer cuisine and bath. Do not philosophize for a long time, take a simple ornament with large segments, they are easier to cut and replicate. This recommendation is especially relevant for beginners;
  • When you want to reflect your family affiliation or the unique ethnic motifs of the area where you live through cashing out, you first have to “shovel” the information on the network. Indeed, in each region, and sometimes even in each city or village, the plot of the ornament may differ. And you should not choose the most complex ornament, even if you really like it, remember that you still have to cut it out with your own hands, and for all the windows in the house;
  • Exclusive exclusive, but the central image of the ornament should be repeated on all windows. So among the Slavs, the sun was almost always depicted on the kokoshnik. And animals, plants or exotic fairy-tale characters on each window can be different. For example, a firebird is placed on the windows in the living room on both sides of the sun. A bear is carved in the bedroom, and exotic fish can be carved in the kitchen and bath;

  • Now the network has a myriad of different patterns for woodcarving. So, if you want a unique ornament and you can’t come up with something of your own, “pull” separate, favorite plots from different ornaments and combine them into one ensemble. To be honest, I always do this myself and recommend it to others, it works great;
  • Platbands can be made slotted, that is, using a jigsaw and a drill, cut a through pattern. Or apply a relief, not through, ornament using a set of chisels and cutters. For beginners, I recommend the first option, it is an order of magnitude simpler;
  • For the second option, in addition to the tool, skill is required. I won’t say that it’s so difficult to cut simple, somewhere even primitive patterns, but it’s better to practice first. From experience I can say that with a good tool, people learn the basics of wood carving in 3 to 7 days.

No need to try to choose a pattern with small, even very beautiful details. First, they will not be visible from a distance. And secondly, small parts are destroyed about 2 times faster. Plus, cutting them is much longer and more difficult.

How to cut the trim yourself

When we are talking about simple patterns, almost every owner will be able to cash out on their windows. As I said, it is better to start with a slotted option. To do this, you only need a jigsaw and a drill with a set of petal and conventional drills.

If you have a manual cutter and Sander the work can be done 2 times faster, and most importantly with higher quality.

When the pangs of creativity are already behind and the pattern has been decided, a stencil will need to be made under it. The stencil should be made from something dense, for example, it can be thick cardboard or a sheet of plastic.

Try to apply the pattern along the fibers of the board whenever possible. The less often the fibers are cut, the less likely cracking of the ornament afterwards.

If artistic relief wood carving is planned, that is, using chisels and cutters, then the board should be taken with a thickness of 30 mm or more. For an overlay pattern with a through slot, a board 10 mm thick is sufficient.

Applying an ornament directly to the base is extremely rare. Such responsible work is only possible for highly qualified professionals. Honestly, as for me, a solid flat board as a base for carved platbands is even better. After all, if you get tired of the patch pattern, you can cut out a new one and quickly replace it.

Work begins with the manufacture of the base. The thickness of a solid board here is taken in the range of 10 - 20 mm. It’s not worth taking more, because together with the overlay, the cashing will look too massive.

Blanks for a kokoshnik, towels and a window sill are simply cut out and pre-sanded with emery. Grinding them clean, as well as varnishing and combining them into a single structure is not worth it yet, we will deal with this later.

Next, we move on to the manufacture of overlays. Naturally, first of all, a pattern is drawn on them through a stencil. At the same time, personally, I immediately mark the points that will be drilled with a drill on the board in a different color, so as not to get confused later.

The following instructions are not particularly difficult. First, the outer contour is cut with a jigsaw. Further along the marked colored points are made through holes petal or conventional drill. Now take a jigsaw, alternately insert it into the internal holes and, as they say, cut out all the excess.

If you have a cutter, it would be nice to remove the curly chamfer along the edge of the ornament we cut out. If there is no cutter or you don’t know how to work with it, then you will have to pick up an emery cloth and clean all surfaces to a perfectly smooth state. Moreover, all cuts must be made rounded.

The process of polishing wood is conditionally divided into 2 stages. First you will need to walk with a large sandpaper and wipe the surface with a wet sponge. From moisture, the so-called pile on the board will rise. And after about half an hour, when the moisture dries, you should clean the surface well with thin emery, to perfect condition.

When the overlays are cut, the edges are rounded and finished, and the front part is perfectly sanded, you can proceed to the process of connecting the overlays to the base. It goes through several stages.

Of course, the easiest way is to screw our figured overlays to the base using self-tapping screws, but in this case, the self-tapping screw heads will need to be deeply sunk into the tree and puttied. Or hammer a wooden chop on top, cut it off and grind it. This approach is justified only if it is planned to paint further overlays.

Some masters simply nail the lining to the base with nails without caps. In principle, the option is acceptable, but I do not recommend it to you. Since without a certain skill, the probability of splitting the curly overlay with a nail is too high.

If you want to tint the wood with a stain and then varnish everything, then you need to act differently. The upper part of the lining must be pristine, without any traces of fastening.

To do this, we will fix the lining with an internal wooden spike. I do so. You remember that the parts of the base have not yet been assembled with us. Therefore, I can easily press the curly overlay to the base with a pair of clamps.

Now, from the back, that is, the inside of the base, I make several blind holes. The drill should go through the entire base and go deeper by at least 5 mm into the wooden array of the lining, ideally, the recess is made half a wooden spike.

You should not fool yourself with the manufacture of wooden spikes, there is more than enough such goodness in stores selling furniture fittings. Moreover, the price of this product is negligible.

When the holes for the spikes are drilled, you can proceed to finishing and assembly of the entire structure. To begin with, all wooden parts need to be treated a couple of times with a protective composition of complex action.

On the market, such impregnation costs reasonable money. It immediately protects against biological pests, mold and mildew. Plus, some formulations include fire retardants (fire protection).

When the tree dries, it is covered with stain. If the application of the tone is not provided, then this step can be skipped and immediately proceed to the application of varnish.

There is a very important point here. The instruction prescribes to fully assemble the structure and then varnish it. I do it a little differently.

I apply the first coat of varnish before assembly. The first layer usually acts as a primer, so it can be applied without fanaticism.

When the varnish dries, I once again go through a thin emery. Since on soft wood, after the first application of varnish, the pile often rises again. When this pile is removed, you can proceed with the assembly.

First, the base is assembled. Ideally, it is supposed to join the elements using the same furniture spikes. But I connect the kokoshnik, towels and window sill with self-tapping screws using metal corners or a strip.

As you remember, we made through holes for the spikes. So, on the reverse side, these holes will need to be sealed so that moisture does not get into them. I use regular putty or window putty for this.

As for the choice of varnish, I use a varnish based on urethane-alkyd. It is also often referred to as yacht varnish. Given that we already have one layer of varnish, we still need to apply at least 2 layers.

If you need a glossy sheen, then there can be 5 or even 7 layers. By the way, domestic manufacturers make urethane-alkyd varnish, of quite decent quality, plus it costs reasonable money. I recently bought a three-liter jar of such a yacht varnish and it cost me only 400 rubles.

The construction of a new house or the overhaul of an old one is always accompanied by the insertion or replacement of windows. Often the choice falls on metal-plastic structures. A simple replacement of the frame will not be enough for the object to get a finished look, the installation of platbands will be required.

Both internal and external platbands for plastic windows are rather simple, but at the same time very useful elements. Everyone is capable of making a choice and putting an overlay bar to hide the mounting seams, but for this it is necessary to study the advantages of plastic trim, get acquainted with the variety of types and installation technology.

What are window trims for?

What kind of fittings to choose to protect the premises from burglaries and robberies is described in our material.

What's good about plastic platbands

What are their advantages, we will analyze in more detail:

  • Resistant to negative impacts atmosphere.
  • Affordable price - platbands made of plastic, much cheaper than wooden ones.
  • Possibility of choice for both ordinary flat slats and carved platbands for plastic windows, which amaze with their beauty.
  • Extensive color range.
  • Do not give in to deformation, owing to influence of dampness or temperature fluctuations.
  • Easy installation process. Plastic platbands are glued directly to the window profile or special removable elements are used.
  • When compared with wooden counterparts, plastic planks do not require constant care. To clean them of accumulated dirt, it is enough to wipe with a wet cloth.
  • Effective, makes it possible to use platbands on plastic windows in a wooden house without losing the overall concept in design.
  • The light weight of the plastic simplifies the mounting procedure so much that you can arrange a small window using double-sided tape.
  • No additional finishing required.
  • Resistant to the formation of mold, fungus. Destruction by insect pests to plastic architraves , does not threaten.
  • Long period of operation

Platbands can be found in different colors, as much as possible in harmony with the facade

Materials for the production of cashing

Platbands are made from various materials. The most popular is sheet plastic. They make a flat cashing out of it, of a standard configuration. It can be monolithic or with voids inside and stiffeners. Sheet plastic is excellent at resisting moisture, ultraviolet rays, temperature fluctuations, and at the same time has a low coefficient of expansion, which makes it possible to carry out gapless installation.

Polyurethane and PVC, similar in their characteristics, are in no less demand. Of these, cashiers for plastic windows are made by casting or pressing. This method allows you to make a very complex external configuration, in particular, imitation of wood carvings. These materials are also resistant to atmospheric influences, excellently withstand both frost and heat, therefore they are practical and durable.

The simplest platbands

Specialists use several ways to fix platbands on windows. Especially common is the technique in which the cashing is fixed to the wall or window frame using special elements. Removable samples are available in a wide range of plastic products. In this case, the platband is fixed on the mounting latches: the fasteners are fixed on the window frame, a plastic platband is placed on top and pressed until it snaps into place (the design works like clothes buttons).

The platband is fixed on mounting latches

When choosing platbands, focus on fastening methods. If the installation involves the use of specialized latches, inspect them for serviceability and the absence of defects.

The method in which the plastic trim on the exterior windows is fixed with the help of double-sided tape stands out with the utmost simplicity. However, the use this method installation of plastic platbands is practically not practiced due to poor reliability. Particularly high risk of damage to the window finish in strong winds

Procedure for installing planks

Consider the procedure for installing platbands on plastic windows with fasteners:

  • Measure the height of the window frame from top to bottom. If installation of the ebb is provided, then the resulting result is increased by the width of the bar. In the case of the presence of strips around the entire perimeter of the window, forming a closed connection, double the width of the casing is added to the height of the frame.
  • Having finished the measurements, we cut the bar into pieces (as a rule, the length of the bar is from 2 to 6 m).
  • On each element we create a cut at an angle of 45 °, it will ensure the correct joining of the parts along the perimeter of the window.

To make an exact angle, you can use special mounting angles that have the desired markings.

Sections on plastic window casings are created according to the following rules:

  • On horizontal slats, cuts should be from both edges;
  • If a closed connection is formed around the window, vertical trims are made with cuts on both edges. If a low tide is provided, on vertical slats the cut is needed exclusively from above.

Installation of platbands on "liquid nails"

The installation process is carried out in three ways:

  • we fix thick and wide platbands for plastic windows with self-tapping screws, wrapping them through prepared holes and into plastic dowels hammered into the wall;
  • we fix light types of planks with moisture-resistant glue, for example, “liquid nails”;
  • if the cashing is installed on a slope, which is finished with sandwich panels or plastic clapboard, then mounting on mounting latches is possible.
